Q&A - Amirah Nesmith '26, PA #1, US #27

1. What specific race or event are you most proud of, and why?

"The 60m dash. Its an event that requires much work during the off season. I am happy that my fall training is paying off."

2. Track and field requires a lot of dedication. How do you balance your training schedule with schoolwork and other commitments, and what keeps you motivated during challenging times?

"I always say school work comes first so I make sure my school work is done before practice. What keeps me motivated is the village I have. Whenever I have bad meets or bad days I can come back and talk to them about what I can fix next time."

3. What are your goals for the rest of the season, and what steps are you taking to achieve them?

"My goals for the season is to win states and be an individual All-American at nationals. What i’m doing to achieve those goals are to stay on top of my strength and recovery."

4. Is there anyone – a coach, teammate, family member, etc. – who has been particularly supportive or influential in your track journey so far? In what way have they been influential?

"I would say my mom has been very supportive. She once was in my shoes so she knows what it takes to get to the top. She was US#3 in the 800 during her time at William Penn High School. She makes sure I’m doing everything I need to do to stay healthy, with massages, cryotherapy, Normatec boots and eating properly. She makes sure I have everything I need to succeed. One thing I appreciate is that she puts no pressure on me to perform but encourages me to go out there and have fun."

2. What aspects of this (DMR performance) accomplishment are most personally rewarding for you as a coach

"Seeing athletes’ joy and pride in their accomplishment is priceless. Sharing in their excitement and knowing that their effort, focus, and sacrifice paid off in this race was a huge reward as a coach. In this performance itself, the athletes displayed discipline, confidence, and resilience through the process. Knowing the experience will positively impact their growth as individuals is deeply gratifying."

3. How has this achievement affected your team's overall morale and motivation?

"This achievement has boosted the morale of the team and has motivated each athlete to set higher expectations of what they would like to achieve this season. I can see the girls working harder in practice and competition to ensure they are able to reduce the time be the end of the season."

4. What are your team's future objectives and aspirations following this accomplishment?

"The team’s objective since the start of the season has been to compete and secure a victory at states. They also want to place in the top six at nationals."

Q&A - Riley Rooney

How has your training regimen contributed to your success as a runner?

"...I think that has really helped me improve my times. I also focus a lot on recovery, I think that is a very important part of training that people skip. I always make sure to roll out and stretch after practice, along with doing cryotherapy and compression boots before races."

What mental strategies do you employ to overcome any of the following challenges: such as fatigue, injury, or adverse weather conditions, during training or competitions?

"...I can struggle with a lot. Before my races I always try to stay relaxed and not stress too much. Whenever I start to get nervous I always talk out my race  plan with my coach and try to stay calm."

How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your training schedule?

"...it can be really challenging for people to balance their academics with their athletics. I am pretty good with trying to be a student before being an athlete and I always put my academics before my running."

How has running shaped your personal growth and character?

"...I started running in third grade and grew up with the sport. It has taught me how to work hard and how to always strive for better. I am so grateful for everything that this sport has given me. "

What are your long-term goals for your running career?

"Next year I will be running for Penn State University. That has always been a dream of mine so I am very excited. I’m hoping to really improve there and I think I will exceed there."

What advice can you share with others in your sport?

"Advice I would give to others is to make sure you have fun with the sport and to enjoy it, but also make sure to put in the work. I think if you can find the right mix between those then running can be an amazing sport."
